The First 72 Hours Are Critical
If you have been involved in a car accident in Oklahoma City, the hours and days immediately following the collision are the most important window for your health and your legal claim. As Medical Director of Accident Care & Treatment Center, I have evaluated thousands of auto accident patients over nearly three decades — and the single biggest mistake I see is waiting too long to seek medical evaluation.
Why Symptoms Are Often Delayed
After a car accident, your body releases adrenaline and endorphins — natural painkillers that can mask injury symptoms for hours or even days. This is why many accident victims walk away from a crash feeling "fine," only to wake up the next morning with severe neck pain, headaches, or back stiffness.
Common delayed-onset symptoms include:
- Neck pain and stiffness — often indicating whiplash, which may not manifest for 24–48 hours
- Headaches — can signal anything from muscle tension to a concussion
- Shoulder and upper back pain — frequently caused by seatbelt trauma
- Numbness or tingling in the arms or hands — may indicate nerve compression or herniated discs
- Dizziness or cognitive fog — potential signs of traumatic brain injury
What Happens During a Medical Evaluation
At Accident Care & Treatment Center, your initial evaluation includes a comprehensive physical examination, neurological assessment, and — when clinically indicated — on-site diagnostic imaging including X-rays and MRI. We document every finding in detail because this medical record becomes the foundation of your insurance claim.
Our physicians look for injuries that are commonly missed in emergency rooms, including:
- Soft tissue injuries (ligament sprains, muscle strains)
- Disc herniations and bulges
- Facet joint dysfunction
- Mild traumatic brain injury (concussion)
- Occipital nerve damage
Understanding PIP Insurance in Oklahoma
Oklahoma law does not require Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage, but many drivers carry it. If you have PIP on your auto policy, it covers medical expenses regardless of who was at fault — up to your policy limit. This means you can begin treatment immediately without waiting for a liability determination.
If you do not have PIP, you can still receive treatment. At Accident Care, we work with attorneys on a lien basis, meaning your treatment costs are covered through your personal injury settlement.
Documentation Is Everything
From a medical-legal perspective, the documentation created in the first 72 hours is often the most important evidence in your case. Insurance adjusters look for gaps in treatment — if you wait two weeks to see a doctor, they will argue your injuries were not serious or were caused by something other than the accident.
What you should do immediately:
- Seek medical evaluation within 24–72 hours — even if you feel okay
- Follow your treatment plan — missed appointments create gaps that insurers exploit
- Keep a symptom journal — document your pain levels, limitations, and how the injuries affect your daily life
- Do not give recorded statements to the other driver's insurance company before consulting an attorney
